Seat Belt Installation Instructions

These instructions are intended for use when replacing the factory fitted lap belts in the 911/912 models from 1969-1973. For 1974 and up models you will be simply removing your old retractable belts and replacing them with the new units.

Removal of the old belts

1/ Remove the existing lap belts from the front seats, this is done by using a 19m/m open end wrench, sliding down between the seat cushion and seatbelt bracket and un-screwing the lower anchor bolt. Keep the short bolts and the wave washer as they will be required to assemble the new parts into the existing seat belt brackets. If your vehicle was fitted with the three point seat belt remove the top anchor bolt from the door pillar and then completely remove the belt from the vehicle.

Installation

1/ Jack the vehicle up in the rear and place jack stands under the body. Remove both rear wheels so that you can easily
access the wheel well area. The seat belt reel anchor point has been originally installed at the time of production and will have a bolt installed in the hole to protect the threads and plug the hole. Using the same 19mm wrench locate the bolt in the rear wheel well and remove it and discard,(Note there will be body sealer and dirt covering the bolt and you may have to use a scraper and or a wire brush to remove enough dirt and debris so that you can get your wrench onto the bolt head). Re-install the rear wheels and lower the vehicle to the ground and torque the lug nuts to 130NM, (95Ft/LB’s)

2/ The seat belt reel will be attached to the anchor point that you have just removed the plug from. From inside the vehicle locate the cutout in the rear trim panel where the seat belt bolt will go through. You can do this one of two ways,

the first way would be to use a sharp awl and push it through the mounting bolt hole from the wheel well side and then using a fresh razor blade cutout the vinyl around the awl so that you can easily see the mounting hole and the surrounding area. The other method would be to remove the complete rear panel, flip it over and locate the cut out in the plastic and carefully cut out the vinyl. If you have removed the rear trim panel to cutout the hole, re-install now. Locate the seat belt reel and the reel mounting kit, you will need the long bolt, wave washer, seatbelt guide plate, and the thick spacer. Assembly the wave washer,(2),onto the bolt,(1), then slide the bolt through the center hole of the reel,(3), then slide the seat belt guide, (4), through the center hole and then spacer,(5) goes on last.

3/ Thread the bolt into the rear anchor point through the rear trim panel and tighten just enough that the reel stays in the upright position. If you are using the reel cover trim feed the seat belt and buckle through the trim piece first and let it sit over the reel for now. Remove the plastic cover from the Shoulder pivot,

and then attach the seat belt shoulder pivot using the short bolt, wave washer, and spacer provided. The wave washer goes onto the bolt first followed by the spacer which when tightened will allow the shoulder pivot to rotate freely.

Now make sure that the strap is straight and not twisted and attach the pivot at the end of the seat belt to the anchor point on the seat. Using the bolt and washer that had been removed from the original lap belt attach the seat belt to the anchor. Please note that there is a raised lip that the anchor bracket must slip over, when the anchor bolt is tight the seat belt must be able to rotate on the raised lip. If the seat belt anchor will not rotate loosen the mounting bolt and re-position the bracket on the mount. You can also go ahead and mount the buckle side to the seat in the same manner as the seat belt.

4/ Before doing the final torque on the seat belt reel you need to make sure that it is positioned correctly, the reel should be straight up and down in relationship to the shoulder pivot. You should be able to smoothly pull the seat belt out without it locking, if you are having problems with the belt constantly locking go back and check that the reel is straight. The guide bracket should also be nice and straight behind the seat belt reel. Once everything is working correctly tighten all of the mounting bolts making sure that the seat belt reel does not move and that the pivot point still move when the bolts are tightened. Once everything is tight and working correctly re-install the plastic trim over the shoulder anchor and screw down the rear reel cover trim,(If using one).
