CDI Wiring Harness installation Instructions;

This harness is designed to replace the existing harness on the 1969-77 Model 911 and 914/6 Vehicles; it requires re-using the original plastic plug used to connect the harness to the CDI Box. If your wiring harness is missing or you are up-dating an older model vehicle to a CDI ignition system you can still use this harness without the plastic plug, simply insulate the individual terminals using the heat shrink supplied with this kit. On the 1975-77 models the original CDI wiring harness is built into the complete engine harness, you will have to disconnect the connections at the Coil, CDI, and the Distributor and then install the new wiring harness next to the original harness.

Step 1.

Disconnect the battery to ensure that the ignition system is not functioning, please be aware that the voltages generated by the ignition system can kill if you are not careful.

Step 2.

Disconnect the original wiring harness from the CDI Box, Ignition Coil, and Distributor. On the 1975-77 models fold the wires back against the original harness and tape to insulate it. Next remove the plug from the harness that connects the harness to the CDI Box, this is done by locating the small slot next the terminal and insert a small flat blade screw driver all the way into it. With the screw driver inserted into the plug pull the wire out though the bottom

Step 3.

Align the new terminals on the new wiring harness and make sure that the tab on the back of the terminals is facing the slot on the plug where you used the screw driver to remove the old terminals. Push in the new terminals one at time making sure that the wire color match’s the original location. To ensure that the terminals are correctly installed lightly pull back on the wire to make sure that it is locked into the plug and does not pull out.

Step 4.

Install the new wire harness into the vehicle, if you are not using the plug from the old harness insulate

the female spade terminals using the heat shrink provided with this kit, then connect the wires one at a time to the box. Terminal “A” is blue and will connect to the coil terminal “15”, Terminal “B” is Red and will connect to the power supply at the fuse panel, and Terminal “C” is Black which is connected to the ignition distributor.

Connect the remaining un-insulated ground wires to the CDI box at the spade terminal on the box, The ring terminal by the coil will connect to the coil mounting stud, and the last connection will connect to one of the timing cover studs close to the ignition distributor. Make sure that all of your connections are clean and tight.

Step 5.

Re-connect the battery and check that the engine will start and run.

Trouble shooting

Engine will not start, No Spark

check all connections are clean and tight. Using a test light check that you 12 volts at the red wire with the ignition on, if no power is present check the fuses on the rear engine fuse panel for a blown fuse or poor connection.

Check that the black wire has continuity to ground when the points are closed, if not replace the ignition points and correctly adjust the point gap.

Check that the blue wire , Terminal “A” is connected to terminal ”15” at the ignition coil and terminal “1” is grounded to the fan housing.

If all of these items check out then it is possible that the CDI Unit may have failed or the coil has failed.
